Some activities for students to do while at school or while travelling:
New Suggesion! Kyoto Group Challenge! - Choose 10 random places quite spread out where you want the groups of students to try and get to. You should not be able to make it to all of them. Planning it with the students is part of the fun. We picked things like temples, sports grounds, gardens etc. You may wish to include photo evidence. 1) Send a postcard to Mr Speedy 2) Eat green tea icecream 3) Photo with most attractive male/female depending if you are guy or girl 4) Photo of shinkansen 5) Photo of blossoms on water 6) Order something new for lunch.
Students are required to write a journal of their observations each day, and to read 2 historical perspectives of the atomic bomb after we have visited Hiroshima.
Each evening we have a “language debrief” over cake and tea to consolidate new learning or confirm meaning, and to share experiences.
The students were given a “cultural” goal every time we went somewhere new; something to take particular note of or to learn about and this was built into the “language debrief”.
On train journeys I got each student to translate the katakana on the posters – they had a poster each.
We gave them Y2000 and had a competition to see who could buy either the most items for Y2000 or the most unusual item. We took them to a Y100 store and gave them 30 minutes. They had a great time. The winners were shouted ice creams.
Scavenger hunts - very popular! We had the students take photos of different kanji, ask Japanese people for directions (had to take a photo) and purchase different items.
Reflection: Every morning and evening each student had to share a new word or phrase that they had learnt or heard that day and also share something cultural that they noticed. The students seemed to really enjoy these peer share sessions.
Students are given pocket money every day to pay for lunch and evening meals and incidental travel so they learned to budget carefully!.
We looked for students who used their initiative in a good way, looked out for others, were helpful and cooperative. We gave prizes every day to those chosen.
